The Techniques I use

What is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)?

EFT was developed by Gary Craig, who based his theories on the work carried out by Dr Roger Callahan (a clinical psychologist) over 25 years ago. Dr Callahan called his technique Thought Field Therapy (TFT), having discovered that by moving the body’s energy in specific ways, distressing emotions could by eliminated, without the use of drugs or any other invasive means.

Gary Craig experimented with various ways of using the same tapping points around the face and upper body that TFT used and discovered that the technique could be simplified. He called this EFT.

EFT is thus based on a combination of the body’s energy system (based in Chinese medicine) and clinical psychology, or talking therapy. By tapping on various points at the end of the body’s meridians, problems can be eliminated in a short time, without years of therapy.

To make it even more powerful, I often combine it with NLP (see below) and visualisation. My intuition, as in all my other sessions, is at least 50% of what makes these sessions so life-changing, and guiding you to use yours is another major component of my sessions. This is holistic healing at its best, in my view.

It is the main technique I use to help clients achieve what they want, as they can also use it for themselves, between and beyond our sessions together.

EFT is very effective for:

  • fear
  • anxiety
  • trauma
  • panic attacks
  • lack of motivation
  • frustration
  • anger
  • pain
  • cravings/addictive urges
  • lack of confidence and self-esteem

What is Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT)?

Relax

IEMT stands for Integral Eye Movement Therapy. If you suffer from, for example, anxiety, stress, anger, insomnia, if you have self-confidence issues, guilt issues, identity issues, or if you suffered trauma or even have PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder), IEMT can help (though not if you suffer from epilepsy or schizophrenia).

I use it specifically for trauma, and my speciality is birth trauma.

IEMT is a short therapy based on how our neurology interacts with emotional imprinting and identity imprinting. It involves helping to release emotions linked to particular events or experiences.

Like EFT, it is a wonderful, quick, practical way to help you manage your emotions. It uses a variety of techniques to help you change your emotional state, to help you change how you feel about particular events or/and experiences.

I use these techniques with you, and then you can use them yourself if you need to. Very much like hypnotherapy and NLP (see below), IEMT is about empowering YOU to make the necessary changes. With this method, you are invited to get inside the problem and then work your way outside it all by yourself. No guidance, no suggestion – YOU have the answers. Indeed, as an IEMT practitioner, just as a hypnotherapist and NLP & EFT practitioner, I do not fix or treat your problem – I just facilitate the change in you.

This method is truly amazing. One minute you have an emotion, the next you don’t, or it is so small that it does not bother you any more. This can be an emotion about the past but also about the future. These changes can be immediate (one session may well be all you need, in particular for birth trauma) and are long-lasting. You will finally be able to feel that you have moved forward and are no longer imprisoned by your issues. Having experienced it and experimented with it myself, I know how powerful it can be.

The technique itself is all about changing the eye movements/patterns that occur when you think about or feel that particular emotion you want to be free from with regard to a particular event or situation. IEMT is about precise calibration to my client. Unlike other treatments involving eye movements, with IEMT the eye movements are neither random nor simply a repetitive left and right movement in the hope that change will occur. I was trained to precisely calibrate which axis through which to lead your eyes to move, enabling the exploration work to occur with precision and at a remarkable speed.

As Andrew Austin, the creator of the method, says, ‘The process explores the question, “How did we learn to feel the way that we feel?” and opens up the possibility of creating the appropriate change in our emotional lives.’

In terms of identity imprinting, it also explores the question, ‘How did we learn to be this way?’

Change is at your fingertips and in the blink of an eye!

What is Reiki?

Hands on face

The word ‘Reiki’ is made up of two Japanese words, ‘Rei’ and ‘ki’, and means ‘universal life force energy’. It is a healing technique whereby the practitioner lays his or her hands on or above the client’s body gently and allows the life force energy to flow through the palm of his or her hands to the client.

This energy, guided spiritually, flows wherever it is required and helps balance and heal the energies within the client’s body. It is beautifully relaxing and promotes healing throughout the body, mind, emotions and spirit, bringing calm, health and happiness.

What is coaching?

Women at computers

According to the International Coaching Community website, ‘the essence of coaching is:

  • to help a person change in the way they wish and helping them go in the direction they want to go
  • to support a person at every level in becoming who they want to be
  • to build awareness, empower choice and lead to change’

Therapy heals, coaching empowers to move forward. In my therapy and coaching business, it is this combination of therapy, healing and coaching that makes me quite unique (see above and below the therapy and healing modalities I use). Together, we can address both your healing and your growth, in all areas.

What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ (NLP)?

flower

Neuro

This refers to the brain and the nervous system and how our experience is received and processed through the five senses: visual (eyes), auditory (ears), kinaesthetic (feeling/touch), olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste).

Linguistic

These are the language and non-verbal communication systems through which our neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning. This again includes pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells, but also words (internal dialogue).

Programming

The ability to really discover, utilise and change the programmes we run in our neurological systems (our communication to ourselves and to others) in order to achieve our specific desired outcomes.

In other words, NLP is all about how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our desired goals.

‘If you think differently, you feel differently, therefore what you can do expands.’ Richard Bandler, Co-creator of NLP

What is hypnosis?

relax

  • Have you ever attended the relaxation part of a yoga class?
  • Have you ever been engrossed in a book or a film?
  • Have you ever driven to a familiar place and wondered how you got to your destination, not remembering anything about your journey?
  • Do you ever daydream, maybe while on a train or watching a flickering candle?
  • Do you ever go to sleep?

If you have answered ‘yes’ to at least one of these questions, you have been under hypnosis. Yes, we have all experienced hypnosis, and we all do at least once a day, just before we go to sleep. In other words, if you have ever been in a state of deep relaxation, you have been under hypnosis. So there is nothing weird, hippie or extra-ordinary about hypnosis – we experience it every day, most of us do several times a day. It is not at all a state where we are out of control and can be manipulated. On the contrary – we are focused and fully in control and can in fact be acutely aware of what is going on in our body, in our mind and around us, of what is being said to us while at the same time not necessarily hearing exactly every word.

The unconscious (or subconscious) is incredibly powerful and is the largest and dominant part of our mind. Think of our mind as an iceberg. The tip of the iceberg is our conscious, and the rest is our unconscious. While we like to think that our actions and reactions are a result of a conscious, logical thought process, they are in fact mostly controlled by the desires of the unconscious, which determines not only our behaviour and emotions, but also pain and illness. This is why even though we know we should stop smoking, eat less, remain calm, be pain-free etc., if the unconscious does not want you to change (whatever the reason might be – mostly because change is ‘dangerous’ and it wants to keep you safe), it will ‘make you’ carry on having the problem(s) that is/are troubling you.

Hypnosis will help you find out what the reason behind this apparent contradiction is. It is indeed widely accepted as an excellent method by which we access our unconscious and therefore our inner potential – this is where most of our habits and emotions originate, so this is where most aspects of our lives can be changed. It is the most beneficial state to make changes within your body, your biochemistry and your mind, in order to bring about the changes you want to achieve in your life.

The state of mind you are in when in hypnosis may be brought about either by yourself (self-hypnosis) or with the help of another person. But in any case, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis, that is, you only go into hypnosis if you are willing to do so and decide to ‘relax into relaxation’, as it were. Therefore you will never do what you would not want to do in a conscious, completely awake state.

What is hypnotherapy?

Flowers and stones

Hypnotherapy is a form of short therapy that uses hypnosis and addresses the client’s subconscious mind in order to bring about the desired change. The hypnotherapist often enlists the power of the client’s own mind and imagination and may utilise a wide range of techniques, from the indirect approach using metaphors (the way Milton Erickson did) to the use of direct suggestions for positive change.

Rest assured, a hypnotherapist cannot make you do or say things that you do not want to do or say, for example reveal your deepest secrets or information that you do not want to share, or run around like a headless chicken (this is what would be classed as ‘stage hypnosis’ and is a different concept, which is not utilised in clinical hypnotherapy). In hypnosis, perhaps even more so than in a ‘waking’ state, the human mind is very much aware of what it wants and does not want and will only accept a suggestion that it wholeheartedly accepts. The therapist has no control over that, therefore has no control over the client.

Please note that hypnotherapy is not suitable for anyone with epilepsy or serious mental health issues (especially schizophrenia). Please check with your GP or consultant before booking.

What is Somasense™?

Somasense™ combines hypnosis, mindfulness and movement as a means of:

  • working with the stories that the body holds – the somatic narrative
  • working with the body to resolve past trauma
  • promoting healing and reintegration

It has been developed as a way to incorporate a mind–body approach into hypnotherapy work.

Incorporating Somasense™ into my work allows me to:

  • help you access the information, memories and experiences which are stored within your body, helping you make sense of your past experiences
  • help you work through past trauma that is continuing to affect your life (if we ignore what is happening in your body – for instance, when you are in a situation that triggers a traumatic memory – your body may still continue to respond in the same way even though you have changed your thoughts or beliefs)
  • work in a ‘content-free’ way if that is appropriate for you (this means you do not have to be able to perfectly recall or articulate a traumatic experience – you can work with the sensations within your body instead
  • working with your body memories also allows us to work with the stuff that you do not have access to in terms of being able to articulate and describe your experiences (maybe because you were too little at the time)
